Ya’ll ever heard that your taste buds change every 7 years?  Well, apparently my fashion sense follows the same cycle.  In college I was all about the professional look: slacks, dresses, pretty skirts, high heels.  You know what you would not see in my closet back then?  Jeans.  No jean skirts, no jean shorts, nothing that related to jean material came near my body.  I was always dressed up, or at least I never looked overly casual.  Fast forward 7 (times a couple) years, and now I’m allllll about casual style.  T-shirts, sandals, and of course, jeans!!  I still love dresses, but more and more I reach for my jeans.  My newest obsession? Distressed girlfriend denim.  Love it.  Live in it.  Obsessed with it.  Think you could never love jeans with holes in them?  Well, read on and I will show you two ways to style your distressed girlfriend jeans.

First, let me explain what makes a pair of jeans “girlfriend.”  Girlfriend jeans are the svelte sister to boyfriend jeans.  They are looser in the legs than straight-leg jeans, but they still tighter and higher on the hip than boyfriend jeans.  The leg is tapered, and they are more flattering than the boyfriend.  While they don’t hug all your curves, they provide shape while still giving you that loose, slouchy style.  I especially love girlfriend denim this time of year–they just have that cool, casual vibe that I want in my spring and summer style.  Plus, I sometimes find skinny jeans claustrophobic in hot weather.  Anybody with me??

For an ultra casual look, I love girlfriend jeans with a white tank.  Add a bit of sparkle with a bracelet or necklace, and you’re good to go!  I paired my tank with a red lace bralette.  Weird choice?  Not really.  I like the pop of red that shows on the straps.  Plus, red bras do not show under a white top.  I know.  Weird.  If showing a little bra strap isn’t your thing, just pair your tank with a nude bra.  Done.

If I want to prep up the denim a bit, I add a graphic tee and a striped blazer.  Stripes will dress up ANY outfit.  Trust me.  Finish the look with a pair of mary janes, or if you really want to go fancier, stilletos!

Shop Distressed Girlfriend Jeans:

**The jeans I am wearing in this post are the American Eagle Tomgirl Jeans.  These are TTS, but I went down a size for a more fitted look.
**I also own the AG Isabel jeans.  I LOVE these jeans!  They aren’t quite as soft as the Tomgirl’s, but they fit so well and are just perfection.  These run a bit small, so I would size up one size.

Shop Blazers:

**I like my blazers to be shrunken.  They fit better and look more casual.  Shrunken blazers also show off the shirt underneath.  Size down one size for a shrunken effect.

**The blazer I am wearing in this post is the Olivia Moon knit blazer.  LOVE it!

**I realize the Alice + Olivia blazer is outrageously expensive.  It was too adorable not to include!

Shop My Sunnies and Sandals:

Sunnies: http://shopstyle.it/l/JjxF  These are the best sunglasses I have ever owned.  The wrap-around design ensures zero squinting!

Sandals: http://shopstyle.it/l/Jjyk  I wear these everywhere!  So comfortable and TTS.

So, what’s your go-to summer jean style?  Please leave comments below!

Cheers!
